At niejta, I draw respectfully on Sámi traditions, with careful thought and deep respect.

When I began working with pewter embroidery, I became increasingly aware of the sensitivities and responsibilities involved in incorporating motifs rooted in a specific culture—particularly one with a complex and difficult history. From the start, I felt it was important not only to appreciate the beauty of traditional designs, but also to consider the cultural context they belong to.

In Japan, Sámi-style bracelets are sometimes presented as “indigenous charms” or accessories that “bring good luck.” However, as I learned more about the Sámi people's history—the challenges they have faced, and their ongoing efforts to protect their rights and culture—I began to question the adequacy of such simplified representations. I felt a deeper and more careful understanding was necessary.

Wanting to approach this respectfully, I reached out to the Sámi Council and spent time reflecting on how I might continue my work in a way that honors the culture involved. I did not receive a reply, but that in itself prompted me to take greater responsibility for how I move forward. I continue to ask myself how I can express respect—not only through the objects I create, but also through the attitude behind them.

While I still make pieces based on traditional Sámi designs, I have also begun developing original patterns. Regardless of the style, I always strive to craft each accessory with sincerity and care. I hope that those who encounter my work will find it beautiful, and at the same time, I make an effort to communicate the thoughts and values behind what I do.

The message I included at the end of my email to the Sámi Council continues to guide me today:

 “I really want to show my respect for the Sámi people and culture whatever I am going to do.”
